Leverkusen's Boniface Should've Seen Red for Overhead Kick Attempt
Former Bundesliga coach Armin Veh has voiced his opinion that Bayer Leverkusen's Victor Boniface should have received a red card during the team's 3-2 loss to RB Leipzig on matchday two of the German Bundesliga. The incident in question occurred in the 12th minute when Boniface attempted an overhead kick, which inadvertently struck Leipzig's midfielder Amadou Haidara in the face.
The match referee, Matthias Jollenbeck, decided to issue a yellow card to the Super Eagles forward for the foul. However, the decision has sparked controversy, with some, including Veh, arguing that a red card would have been more appropriate given the severity of the incident, which resulted in Haidara being substituted due to injury.
Veh commented on the situation, stating, If that happens in midfield, it's a red card, that's for sure. I would have given him a red card, his opponent had to be substituted afterwards. Sure, he tried to score, but it was so close. Despite the debate surrounding the decision, Boniface played until the 77th minute before being replaced by Patrick Schick.
This loss marks Bayer Leverkusen's first defeat in the Bundesliga after a 35-match unbeaten run.
